What is PRP Therapy for hair loss?

Platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) therapy is a hair loss treatment. It is a 3-step treatment in which the blood of the patient is drawn and injected into his scalp.

PRP triggers the natural growth of hair by increasing the blood supply to the hair follicle. It also increases the thickness of the hair shaft.

What is the complete PRP therapy process?

3-steps are involved in PRP therapy. Let’s know each step in detail:

    1st Step

Firstly, the hair transplant specialist will draw your blood, mostly from the arm. He will put the blood into a machine called centrifuge. Centrifuge machine spins rapidly to separate fluids of different densities.

    2st Step

The blood would place in the centrifuge for nearly 10 minutes, and then the blood will get separate into 3 different components- Platelet-poor plasma, Platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells.

    3st Step

From the above components, the hair transplant specialist would draw platelet-rich plasma part into a syringe and will inject in those areas of the scalp which requires hair growth.

The injecting time of the PRP is nearly 5 minutes but the centrifugal process may take 45-60 minutes.

What are the risk factors involved?

Probably, the above-mentioned procedure sounds scary (drawing blood and injecting into the scalp through needles!!), but contrary to it, there is no such real risk in the PRP process. Mostly the patients get injections by numbing and there is minimal discomfort. Cool air or ice packs may also be used in minimizing pain.

    What results you can expect?

In order to get the best results, you should consult your hair transplant regularly. Generally, the PRP therapies are performed once a month for the initial 3-4 months. And then once in every 3-6 months.

Initially, a patient may notice in the reduction of the hair fall, followed by the regrowth of the hair, along with the increase in the length of hair. As per the hair specialist, if a patient is looking for the long-term results then receiving treatment every 3-6 months is optimal.

The price range depends on the number of injections a person may require to inject.

    Misconceptions about PRP:

PRP provides new hair on the bald area:

It is a common misconception about PRP that it can provide new hair on the bald area. If the person has lost hair due to the androgenic alopecia, in which the DHT hormone is responsible for hair loss, then he can’t get new hair by PRP. Therefore, a person having hair loss due to alopecia can’t get new hair by PRP even after 15-20 treatments.

    PRP provides permanent results:

No, PRP doesn’t provide the permanent results. The patient needs to visit the doctor at least once in six months, for continued results.

    PRP is only for males:

No, in fact, in females, the hair loss is not due to androgenic alopecia, and due to other reasons, so it would be very beneficial for the females to get PRP treatment for the hair loss.
